He did win it on merit really, he was well ahead after the round of official voting, it was only after the public telephone vote was added that it swung massively to Ukraine, they got more than half their total points just from that, which jumped them from 7th into 1st place. * +

The ESC has always been the symbolism of European political stature. I didn't know Ukraine was in the EU.. but clearly they would be awarded the position regardless. They probably had help to sound good. * +
