you can go to settings/developer options/ and scroll down to where you can limit the number of background processes for a short term fix (until you reboot). otherwise, as john_163 says you'll need to delete bloatware apps that are safe to remove without causing problems...
don't bother with a task killer app, they're pointless as anything you kill will restart themselves in the background... * +

Android is designed to work differently than other os systems. Android wants to fill ram so that everything is ready in an instant, the moment it runs out of memory it'll close the earliest opened idle tasks to make room for the newly opened app... * +

The iPads do with Safari, in anyway, iOS doesn't truly multitasking like Android does, so no real comparison here, but the Retina iPads are in need of more RAM. * +
