I think they are same thing but im not certain. I rooted with kingroot and tried to use cwm rom manager to make a back up, but my device wasnt supported. Ive read about something called phils cwm 6 for s4 mini but from my understanding i need access to a laptop or pc to use it and i dont have access at the moment. The s4 mini is a spare phone so i just want to try and learn the ropes with that and install a few things like adaway and xmod. And when im more confident il root my galaxy alpha too. Ive unrooted at moment because i want to learn how to create a back up before i go fking about. Any advice will be great *

yes a nandroid is a backup of the whole phone. you don't need a PC to flash a custom recovery. if you're creating a backup you need it with root active for a custom recovery and you want root backed up rather than not.
go to the playstore and type in recovery flasher, it may sound unlikely but if you can find one that supports your phone, you'll be able to flash a custom recovery (which is always there to help no matter how screwed up your phone is). as long as you have a superuser app to authorise root apps you'll be able to flash whatever recovery you can e.g. Phil's custom, TWRP or CWM...
