Ive got a volvo 460 2ltr that will run on tickover but as soon as i ask for more than 1100revs the revs die away.its got a spark fuel and ticks over but wont drive.what could be causing it please? * +

Hey, sounds possibly as car has gone into self protect mode? As most cars do when there is a bigger problem underlying, or that simply you have an ignition coil that's packed up? Have you one at a time , taken ht leads out and seen if spark from each? If 1/2 not that maybe a break in ht lead or coil, best time to look is in dark, pop hood n start it and see if can see sparks tracking from ht/coil/ * +

Ps, have you tested your battery/alternator? Just a thought, but if battery flat, it can't supply power to the distributer/sparks, so no power= no sparks alternatively, if alternator not working, it's not charging the battery, so ur cars rubbing purely upon battery source and once dead = no anything, need a battery/alternator tester, halfords quick fit etc will check for free :) x * +

Thanx for answering :) theres a spark when my dad took plugs out and from ht leads but he got a shock holding 1.plugs are sooty and its using alot of petrol.if theres a problem with leads why does it run on tickover but not when you push accelerator down? * +

No worries, a: don't hold ht leads!!! 100,000 + volts!! Hold with insulated pliars even plastic kitchen tongs, test each lead by turning engine off pull out lead,n with tongs,hold near rocker cover,turn off engine, refit, n pull out next one, then restart- repeat for all 4:) sound like ur running v rich,this will flood engine with too much fuel and will overload sparks,ur question about sparks the * +

Batterys ok and been recharged just in case.when i push my foot down theres a noise from air intake ehoing.dad says filters ok though and air intake not blocked * +

N, not when rev, when on idle, no loads on system.ie u walking , u rev it/ accelerate etc u put system under load, so exagerates any problem, ie u running upstairs with bags, sounds to me, as if couple of issues, cars obviously running rich, and an electrical issue, rich can be several things,1, throttle body dirty and air sensors filthy giving bad o2/fuel mixture- clean ur with carb cleaner from * +
