as a vauxhall fan, i would buy the astra out of spite, due to the cr*p that ford served up till the mid 90's. The engines were so gruff and under-engineered. My mate had so many weekends wasted, repairing various fords. After a few years, he changed to a cavalier 2.0i and took it from 80,000 to 190,000 miles in 3yrs without ever breaking down. * +

and i drove a few cav cdi's over 8yrs and 2 of tem went over 200,000 miles with no problems. And i'm talking about a 1984 car in amonst the high milers. The older ford engines (that they still shamelessly chucked into the Ka etc) until recently??...you had to start praying when it hit 80,000 miles and over! *
