I parked my mini cooper (51 plate petrol) up last night and when I walked away there was an electrical noise wirring, the next morning the battery was completely flat and terrible burning smell in the car, iv replaced the battery and the car starts but there is no power steering and the red battery light stays on! * +

Also there is a 5amp fuse in the passenger footwell that keeps blowing it has a picture of a car battery! Any help or ideas would be great!!!! * +

Hey buddy, 5 amps isn't much, but, do u have a battery volt meter on ur dash? If so, turn engine on n see if goes to 14v, this shows if your alternator is working and charging battery, if so, not an issue, but also sounds like u have a short in battery wiring, try taking contacts off and follow wires to see if any bare or not earthed to car, as would explain fuse n dead battery, or, do u have an a * +

Don't have a voltmeter in the car!! And car has no alarm!! * +

Oh n as for power steering, maybe it's sharing a fuse or, and it is an or, as can't see it, ur belt/ pump has gone? Check if can see belt, and read manual to see which fuse it uses, electrics are a pain in a car, but it maybe as simple as two wires have rubbed- exposed n shorted, try a good look under hood n follow all wires off batt n those of pump * +

Ok that eradicates alarm drawing power,as for volt meter, pop to halfords or Kwik fit n ask to check battery n alernator, should be 12.4v in battery n 14v output from alternator , plus take old battery, as maybe fine once charged, but sounds to me as though u have a short * +

Iv been told that if the battery does not have enough power it will shut down some electrical things! The power steering is electric on minis and this is usually shut down first!! It even says in manual if battery warning light comes on power steering will not work!! * +
