Get the mixture screws set by someone who knows what they doing. When you say loose screw, you do mean one of the screws holding the carb together, rather than the idle or mixture screw, right? * +

First go round the carb an see where it is leaking from, 2 reasons if its leaking from the side you need to strip an replace the gasket on it, has the diaphram split? To be honest i would take the carb's off split them down clean the float bowl out an the main an second jets out, make sure they aint blocked, clean away all the muck from everything put them back together an they should be fine. * +

Yeah,Maybe that screw was mixture or idle?,try openin it half turns at a time until idle smooth,then take to mech to get mixture sorted *
