I have a problem,i took out my 1968 vw1500 beetle engine because it made a clapping sound and broke 3 starters, replaced the ring gear and oil seal, put back the engine, now theres nothing wrong with the starter, but theres another Knocking (doef doef) sound when im cranking the engine, and the engine turns over very stiff?could it be that i had put in the oil seal wrong? *

Wrong oil seal wouldn't cause that, unless it's come adrift and jammed. Why have you gone thru 3 starters? Are you fitting correct starter motors? Diff engines have diff starters, 6v diff than 12v. *

there was something wrong with the ring gear.when the starter slipped the bendix climb over the ring gear and brake the armature s haft.can it be the shimms that cause the stiffness?because the new ring gear is of a 1300 beetle. *

Did you make sure all the broken bits came out before reassembly? Afraid you're gonna have to split the engine/box again. Look for scoring or damage on the housing, check the flywheel for damaged teeth. Something sounds like it's jamming. Far as i know, starter the same for all 12v engines 1300 to1600 *
