No, legally you can tow whatever your license permits because your policy should cover your liability, thats a basic minimum required for all policies in the uk anyway. However in terms of whether the caravan is actually insured against damage to it depends on your policy. Many policies cover the caravan but only third party level. So if you want comprehensive cover for potential damage to the caravan, you'll need to check with your existing insurer and possibly seek more insurance there * +

Nobody pays attention to that though I think max weight is 3.5 tonnes combined as long as the caravan is under half of that. So technically you could take a 1.74 tonne caravan loaded if your vehicle weighs 1.76 tonnes loaded. Typical kerb weight of a large saloon with 4 adults and luggage might be 1800kg. Only really large tourers will exceed 1600kg. Of course if you have a massive tourer and plan to use a shogun or whatever, then you'll be overweight for sure. *
