I recently bought an xbox 360 for the mrs' grandkids, set it all up and turned it on. The green console light came on for a second, followed by a solid red light and nothing on the screen. no error message, nothing.The power unit glows orange in standby and green when the unit is switched on. A couple of times it's actually come on, only to switch off again when I tried to download my profile. * +

Never happened to me and my console is 3 years old. It's a slim though. The new E looks cr*p though.
But compared to the One it's A-okay. (good) * +

I've turned the power off, removed all cables, left it alone for a bit and tried a different plug socket, only for it to do the same thing. The power light goes from green to red and nothing at all on screen. Any ideas what's wrong and anything I can do to fix it? can it be the power supply if its orange then green from off to on? Any ideas and help would be deeply and gratefully appreciated. Many thanks in advance...

The power cable is okay. It does that all the time. Something is up with your console.
