Before we do anything, we need to completely uninstall itunes . Before uninstalling, be sure to back up all of your itunes data. You can google how to protect your apps and stuff. Also, go to apple.com and read uninstalling itunes because it has to be done very specifically. * +

Install the older version of itunes. You can then save all of your stuff from your iphone into the itunes. After that, put your iphone into RECOVERY MODE. You can google that. Be sure its recovery-NOT DFU MODE. * +

Next, make sure you have renamed your iphone 3.1.2 firmware file extension to .ipsw if its a zip file. Simple way to tell is if its already the right extention (.ipsw) it'll look like a LEGO block, if its a zip, it'll look like a stack of books. * +

Plug into pc now and wait for itunes to recognize your phone. You'll get a yellow triangle that says Blah Blah Blah recovery mode. Hit ok. Next, hold down the shift key and then hit restore in itunes. Browse to wherever you left the .ipsw file-hit open. Now itunes'll do the whole restore to version 3.1.2-hit ok. * +
