The egg. Something that wasn't quite a chicken yet, evolutionary speaking, laid an egg. And out of that egg came the first chicken. The background radiation of the earth is necessary for evolution, as it creates random mutations in all living things, running at about one in a thousand. The chicken.
It evolved from a creature that gave birth directly, like we do. During it's evolution it was too vulnerable to attack whilst pregnant, so it began to give birth early to babies still cocooned, where they could be hidden/nested. * +
