He's probably talking about the carbon footprint that owning a pet produces. This is not some brand new piece of research, it's something that's been known about for ages. I remember it being on an old episode of QI from years ago and I think I can remember Clarkson mentioning it on Top Gear as well.

A medium sized breed of dog like a Labrador, produces a carbon footprint during it's lifetime that is roughly similar to that of running a large diesel powered family car or SUV for the same amount of time. *
