That only works on a map though, in the real world you'd need to already know which direction you were facing. Probably best to just use a compass, or if it's night time and the weather permits it, then you can use the stars to find your bearings. If you know how to spot Polaris(aka the North Star) in the northern hemisphere you can always find North, or if you're in the southern hemisphere you can use the Southern Cross to find which way is due South. * +
