So in Matthew it say's that Jacob is Joseph's father yet according to Luke, his name was Heli. So which one is correct? * +

It's a little tricky. The Jews had levirate laws which said that if a man died without having children, the widow would be with his brother or male relative and that the first born would wield the name of the first husband. Joseph's mother was the widow of Heli, who died without children. The widow bore Joseph by Jacob, so there you have it. * +

So if it's wondered why both names are used, it's because both are acceptable. It's just a simple matter of legal or personal nods to lineage. * +

the genealogy in matthew traces Joseph and the genealogy in luke traces Mary... To show that they both came from Abrahams seed as promised, proving Jesus' legal right as the heir of David (thus the attention of a Jewish reader is arrested). women arent named in the genealogy so in both matthew and luke only Joseph is mentioned, but Heli was the biological father of Mary. (And father-in-law to Joseph) * +

Unfortunately this is an incorrect answer since both ''Luke'' and ''Matthew'' are giving Joseph's genealogy and Mary's is not given. * +
