There's alot of confusion going on about the history of Nelson Mandela's role in the ANC and the anti apartheid struggle. This is not a post to condem him but to recognise him as another human who made errors but in the end still managed to bring about a peaceful transistion from the apartheid rule to the current rule at a time when civil war was inevitable. * +

The main arguments is whether he was a terrorist or not. The truth is the younger mandela was an active supporter of a violent and radical resistance to the apartheid regime before the sharpville shootings. Then one of the leaders of the anc youth league he was suppressed by the ANC leaders who believed in peaceful mass protests as the only way to oppose the government of the time. It was only after the sharpville shootings of 1960 that they ANC leadership conceded and mandela formed umkhonto we sizwe, the military wing of the ANC. * +

Plan m, which was established by mandela, saw guerilla tactics being used against the aprtheid regime. Goverment buildings, restaurants, shopping centres and cinema s were targeted by bombs and other actions included intimidation and murder of black people deemed apartheid spies took place. How ever alot of this was carried out after mandela was imprisoned. It doesn't wash his hands though as the planning was his to start with as was the call to violent resistance.

it may be that what he did was wrong but the difficulty with that is that none of us live in a system where we are legally discriminated against in all aspects of our everyday lives * +

how do we know how we would react if we grew up in a system like that?we can only guess.I may have been a terrorist in those circumstances, would certainly have a strong sense of injustice * +

After his imprisonment MK took violence a step further. His then wife winnie mandela spear headed the necklace killings, which was to burn the victim alive who was doused with petrol and had a car tyre put around them. MK started to target more cilvilian targets irrespective of race, the pretoria bombing of 1983 killed 11 whites and 8 blacks alone. Also there are many untold stories of MK attacks against whites in the neighbouring countries as MK joined forces with other resistance groups. Further ANC detetion centres had routine torturing and executions of prisoners, the exact numbers of the necklace and dention centres are unkown but it is estimated in the thousands. * +

Thats why I said digits I'm not condeming him but he was a human like the rest of us. His greatest achievement was bringing about a peaceful resolution to apartheid which he deserves respect for but should he be seen as a semi messiah, which many people believe him to be? * +
