They said that talks fell through with Google because they wouldn't allow Google Maps to be removed from Android, in favor of Ovi maps, and that they wouldn't allow Nokia to change how Android handle PIMs * +

That's not the reason. Microsoft was able to offer more money per phone to Nokia. Stephen Elop specifically mentioned that the deal is in billions of dollars. Check out the 4th video from the Announcement day, its available on Nokia Conversations * +

Android as an OS is free but Google uses it to sell their own services. Google integration comes at a hefty price. Had Nokia gone with free version of Android, they'd have to port all Ovi services and offer them instead of Google Services. Android without Google services is toothless, there was no point of doing this. * +

Ovi Maps is much better than Google Maps, that's why Microsoft is paying Nokia to use Ovi Maps across all Microsoft services. * +
