I was watching a dvd on my laptop I finished switched it off because my battery was low. plugged it back in for just a screen saver to come on like my start page with no icons or anything it doesn't even ask me to log in? does anyone know what it is or what I can do? I've tried escape but nothing works... please help me I don't know what to do. * +

try booting into safe mode. it sounds like a driver has become corrupt and is causing a timeout (crash) if windows boots into safe mode then look in the event viewer (acontrol pannel/admin tools) it should show the error ther for what caused the previous crash. hopfully when you reboot into normal mode the pc will boot as normal (due to some registry entrys being re written at shut down) * +

if you can boot after it should be fine and just a question of repairing what crashed. if you cant boot but can in safe mode, go to run and type msconfig you will see 3 options for startup on the first tab disable them 1 at a time. and reboot if you manage to get it to boot with say the startup entrys dissbled then its something in your startup that has failed. find and remove it and boot normaly * +

I left it off for 10 minutes then re booted and it worked thanks j for the help though. I need to find out why it happened or what. I will do what you just wrote and find it and sort it out. * +

corupted registry or page file, on the reboot the o.s. probably created a new reg entry or new pagefile (it can in some cases delete the old and self repair) *
