This is for a friend i'm trying to help. He has a laptop running vista and the laptop was running slow because he reckons it got a virus and now whenever he starts it, he sees a black screen with error message 'no boot system'. He does not have the installation disc because the laptop was bought overseas and he never got a disk with it. Any way around this? Or what can he do to sort out the problem? * +

the system boot has been compromised, get a copy of vista that he's running and use it to repair as i doubt you make a system repair disk when you had the chance. * +

well its not my laptop its a friends, i skipped vista and went straight to win7. best move ever. I figured that much too, that only a vista disk would help... he doesn't have it, infact has never had one and i do not know anyone who has either. so in essence besides a rescue disk which he didn't create only a vista disk will save him from a full format? * +

almost same problem happened with me but i kept it i didnt formatted it and now hard disk is not working * +

Use a vista disk and run the recovery console. Do a boot fix and mbrfix. Otherwise youll have to get a disk called Hiron Boot CD. Use partition table doctor to fix it * +

Hiron boot cd? interesting. have heard of it. having lots of tools and what not but have never bothered to find out about. thanks. will check it out. i just had a thought. since he wants to save his precious data wouldnt a linux distro help? to gain acess to the files and copy em to a disk or usb flash drive? * +

if the file is gone that is pointing to the data you will have only raw data. you could try it and run a mbr repair from within Linux * +
