Subject: 10-bit encoding in h.264

Linux users, especially users of stable debian and ubuntu etc. May still not have proper 10-bit support in their repository versions of codecs, players etc. Ubuntu 11.10 did not have it after launch. I've compiled MPlayer with ffmpeg from source for myself a bunch of times now since december using a guide from ubuntuforums ( link http://is.gd/r9katV- ) and combined it with the PPA version of SMPlayer. There is also a VLC building guide there if you really want to use VLC. There's also a PPA for it. Ubuntu 12.04 will probably be up-to-date enough with the codecs and players so people don't have to do things on their own. Still, software compiled specifically for your system can have noticeably better performance. * +

As for Mac users, there were the VLC nightlies. Obviously VLC stable now since it's released along with the other main releases. You could build MPlayer for OS X yourself and use a GUI such as MPlayer OS X Extended or something else. I don't really follow the happenings in the Mac world. *
