i tried vlc,it has a nice habit of crashing when messing with the effects and filters for some time. and the interface ain't good. if i remmember right,it plays 'visualisations' in a window. its all garbled. smplayer for me,it plays anything and uses all the advanced features of mplayer plus,it adds an improved zoom feature,playlist. downside,the interface is not very stylish. but that depends on your windows theme,actually. it does the job for me anyway. no need for klite either. * +

Vlc was my fav video player untill yesterday lol coz i tried this smplayer n its really good using it as default now. * +

Kmplayer replaced VLC ages ago for me. I only have vlc for the stubborn files that refuse to play on kmplayer * +

@edit.or: there hasn't been a need for K-Lite or any other codec packs for most things for a long time. MPC-HC with their own filterpack was always fine for most things. Something like FLAC downmixing would need to be done externally unless they've added that more recently. That's the only problem i've run into. And back when RMVB was still alive, real alternative was better than ffmpeg. But that was like in 2007. They added improved-enough support in 2008/2009. * +
