my work mate sold somebody a dell inspiron laptop 2 months ago that used to be mine. when I had it I paid just over 100 quid to have the screen replaced cos it had loads of dodgy pixels. although its an old 6000 series dell(prob around 2006) I liked it so much I paid out to havre it done. * +

obviously I sold it in the end and my mate sold it on. the new owner was happy with it untill the screen went the other day. although you can still just about see the desktop meaning the panel must be ok, so Iam assuming the backlight has gone am I right? * +

what I would like to know is: can you just have the backlight replaced or do you have to have the whole lot replaced again? baring in mind the screen is not the newer led type and uses an inverter * +

I did tell the owner I wouldnt advise forking out money to have it replaced a second time baring in mind the age of the laptop and also the fact that it may fail a second time. because whatever caused it to go the first time could cause it to go again. * +

suppose it could be the backlight or the inverter. assuming its either one of those two does anybody know how much it would cost to repair? would it be economical to do it in this case? I think the inverter is quite cheap but iam just thinking of the labour? any help would be greatly appreciated * +

a typical screen replacement is around 100 english pounds sterling on a full size 15 inch laptop as you say but I have no idea of the cost of an inverter or backlight replacement sorry * +
