if you mean can you put you hard drive in a mates laptop, format it and install windows from a dvd disk ( as yours not working) then put it back in to your laptop, then your answer is no, different machine different drivers installed during instalation * +

yes you can do iv via a usb stick but i dont know how for xp only done it for win7, google 'install xp from flashdrive' *
