My old windows home pc crashed leaving me frustrated as i had lots of pics and tunes on it...it had a password on it for windows and i now have a new laptop and was told i cud get into the drive a an external but it won't let me due to it being password protected.. download rescatux.burn it to a cd. Or just use any linux distro to grab the files from outside the system! Rescatux Is free and resets windows passwords! * +

you could also try trinity rescue kit,hirens boot cd. Both free also! Goodluck! * +

I know the password it's just the pc the drive was in gave up so now i have it as an external drive but can't access the files due to the password.... * +

Download and install this http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ Right click on the folders that are giving you errors and take ownership. Now try to copy them. * +

If the drive was encrypted you will not be able to get any data off of it without the certificate that you should have backed up. * +
