Recently bought a Sony Vaio laptop. They don't provide Windows and Drivers on disc. I have created three drives as C, D and E. The OS is on C: drive. What if I want to re-install windows. If i use the recovery will it effect the other two drives where all my datas(movies, music, software etc.) are stored? * +

Yes. If I remember correctly it will restore the laptop to EXACTLY how it was when you first got it. BTW, you should use the Vaio software to make recovery media. All it does is makes bootable disks of the recovery partition.. Just in case something happens to that partition in the future. * +

Can I use conventional method of formating C drive by using a pirated OS? * +

Yes. You can install Win7/8 and then get all the needed drivers from Sony's website. You wont be able to download some of the bundled software that came with the laptop though. After making recovery media you can play around with extracting the software in the recovery partition, but you will need to do a google search to find out how. * +

Seriously, make some recovery media, you will be glad you did in the future. * +

Oh, about activating after installing the OS. You will have SLIC written in the BIOS to activate Windows. You will only be able to activate the version of Windows that came with the laptop. Windows 7 will activate no matter which edition you install (this might exclude 'N' versions). Windows 8 I'm not sure about so you would be best off installing the same version that came with the computer. * +

You will need to import the corresponding certificate and OEM key for your laptop. All info can be found at MDL Forums, just google. * +

thanks a lot for the info. One more thing, the laptop specs says HDD size is 700 GB but only 500 Gb is usable. Is it occupied by the recovery files, if so is there anyway to make use of it? * +
