i use avidemux for that. its a bit buggy sure, and advanced here and there but it does the job straight forward and its the best video editor and encoder i can find. it also extracts audio without converting it. its completely portable, liteweight, independent.. a tool worth keeping in mind * +

and for editing the resulting mp3s, splitting, etc.. mp3 direct cut is excellent, it will process and save without reconverting and its extremely liteweight. i think you can get it from softpedia * +
