I'm confused... My Sony vaio laptop running win 7 connected to my BT Hub 3 with no problems, the same with my iMac,iPad and iPhone. But my older PC running win XP and using a USB wifi dongle and my brothers Sony vaio laptop running windows vista won't connect properly at all. I'm not sure what the problem is, anyone got any ideas please? * +

Is your brothers vista using the dongle too? If not update the wifi drivers? That worked for me before, as for the dongle is it the same brand and specs as the router? Wireless g or n? Those things are bad for compatibility * +

My brothers laptop has built in wifi. The wireless dongle is not the same brand as the router, I got it cheap off amazon. * +

Different technology using different frequencies , open device manager do you see it in there? Did it install drivers when you first plugged it in? What brand and model name is it? What brand and model is your router? * +

The wifi dongle came with drivers. It installed ok. If I go to connect and put in the settings for security etc it connects for a few seconds and then disconnects. The router is a BT homehub 3. * +

I would bet the problem is with the older devices using older technology and your router set up for newer tech. There is the G and N wireless tech and types of encryption used that might not be compatible. * +

Access your routers wireless menu and look at what settings it is using. For maximum compatability you could use the G band (not sure if band is the correct word to use) and WEP. But remember that WEP is easy to hack. * +
