My mate has a Sony Vaio and had the same exact problem. In his case it was a matter of removing the dust from the CPU heatsink/cool mechanism... the thing would heat up and start making noise like it was going to lift off or something. So try check for dust clogs on the motherboard. * +

reminds me of the exploding battery issue Sony once had with their laptops ages ago. if I were you denise I would get it checked over with your retailer or wherever you purchased it from as a matter of health and safety more than anything else! check the fan is working? although I feel fairly certain it would be on a new machine. * +

(you may need to put your ear right next to the fan to hear it working because they can be very quiet running on some modern laptops, either that or pop your hand by it and feel for hot air coming out) * +

Well I meant that for the same price you could get a better laptop from a company like Asus or Acer. I bought a Vaio though. *
