So weird question. My hdd crashed. Totally fked. And its an old IDE drive, which are really expensive. I only need to hang on for about 2 months before I get another pc. So question, can I use a flash drive (say 16gb) to install windows xp on and use that as my hdd? Just want to watch videos and play red alert 2. Will it be fine or is it gonna be really slow? * +

buy an external HDD. You can get a 500gb for cheap. That would be optimal. * +

You may not be able to install your Windows on a thumb drive, most of them don't meet the minimum data transfere speeds. * +

theoretically its possible to install and run windows xp from the flash drive however transfer speeds read and write access speeds will slow things for you and not really worth it. I know the feeling as my HD's are slowly dying too. one died today, making some clicking sound dont even know if i can recover anything on it * +

if you can install it, try it, what do you have to lose anyway : ) i wouldn't count on gaming, but playing movies and listening to music perhaps. i think fat is a better filesystem to use for a flash drive then ntfs, think it wears less. the only disadvantage in using a flash drive is really low disk speed for all your system files. maybe that can be overcome by catching them into memory. it is an interesting experiment and with a properly configured system, i'd say it is possible to really en * +

to really enjoy the speed. ram is the key here. running a live cd is another way to feel like you have a usable computer and pass time. maybe you can play movies too, i didn't try yet.. : ) * +
