i'd like to try a distribution of linux. please you linux users out there, i need the following. first to choose a distribution. extreme eye candy capable, quick, minimalistic/non bloated/lite to bare bones but still support adding the programs and features that any other bells and whistles distros come bundled with, highest user interface customizations possibilities that you can think of, ability for a simple user interface but also advanced one (high customization), as little embedded intern * +

as little embedded internet dependency as possible (no internet links in dialogs, automatic connections to extend features etc), an offline standalone os with minimal preferably no bundled applications (that are not required for the system working, examples on windows, movie maker, windows media player, security center, internet explorer, pinball etc..) .. aand that would be a nice start : ) now, it doesn't have to literaly follow all these to the point but the closest possible you can think o * +

the closest possible you can think of will help. if possible, something non standard rarer distro that doesnt try to favor every user and also not a begginers linux that helps transition from windows, i want to try linux. also, im looking for a distro that doesnt insist on formating the entire drive but just the partition. thats for the distribution. now other things, it could also be helpfull to tell me some nice linux software that you use and that i can give a try. that way i can easily dive * +

Go for Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint or for a smaller distro, Saluki Puppy or Lighthouse Puppy * +

If you want minimalistic, really good distro, get Saluki. It's very nice and small. If you want a familiar experience, get Mint with Mate desktop. I'd try before committing to anything. If you have a spare USB drive, format it to FAT32 and build a bootable stick to try em out * +

if you want barebones, try Racy Puppy. Theres also d*mn Small, and several others. A few other good distros to look into are Mandriva, Mandrake, Debian and Backtrack * +

that way i can easily dive into power of linux. it would be nice to know how do you normaly install linux software. rpm, that? what filetypes/archives? it can be found in and everything i should know about environments like kde, gtk and etc. and everything else good to know about linux. i cant find a straight forward guide for this so i hope you can make this topic a nice resource for anyone looking into linux. you can also post links to useful linux related sites * +
