Do you mean burning a CD/DVD? Don't worry, they never last that long. Just buy an external CD/DVD RW drive, it's a lot cheaper than replacing the internal drive. Amazon has the Amazon Basics brand which is a very good deal. * +

Could be that the firmware needs updating. Old FW will have problems with new disks. Try installing [link]ImgBurn:http://www.imgburn.com/[/link], run the app, click 'write image file to disk', click tools, drive, check for firmware updates. Then download and update if there is newer firmware.

You could also try a DVD drive cleaning kit. Or maybe the drive is just on it's way out. * +

if it aint fkd then just gently wipe the laser lens with some lint free cloth ,and replace dvd is pretty straightforward , in my dell it was super easy as was modular and just pushed a button and pulled it out,bur as mok says the external ones arw cheap and maybe youll get lightscribe aswell :-) and from 10 quid upwards aint expensive * +

Most of the RW errors on a DVD drive is caused by the laser becoming misaligned. It cost more to realign the laser than it is to replace the DVD drive. No, you do not have the tools to realign the drive because you have to make plastics to do it. * +
