a mac is a unique adress of a device linked to the network adapter. and since macs are unique, mac filtering is a security method of allowing only devices with authorized mac adresses to connect to the access point. but like ji_dl said, its possible to bypass that - you could spoof your mac to an authorize one, for example. but firstly you'd need to know if mac filtering is infact enabled, and then you'd need a list of the authorized mac adresses. * +
